The Story of Høvringen Ski School – Today Rondane Skisenter
In the winter of 1977, Danish ski instructor Henrik Morell arrived at Høvringen for the first time. He was immediately captivated by the mountains, the tranquility, and the welcoming atmosphere at the gateway to Rondane National Park. That same winter, he founded Høvringen Ski School – an initiative that would become a cherished and enduring part of Høvringen’s winter scene for generations of visiting skiers.
In the beginning, the ski school was small and simple. Henrik taught guests, organised local tours, and led trips into the national park. Many visitors – especially Danes in the early years – returned year after year to learn how to ski. Several became lifelong friends of the place and have since passed their love for Høvringen on to their children and grandchildren.
Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, the ski school grew steadily. Over time, it became both a teaching centre, shop, and natural meeting point for Høvringen’s ski guests. By the mid-2010s, Henrik had built up a solid rental base and a strong network of instructors, guests, and local partners.
After more than 41 winters in Høvringen, Henrik retired in 2018 and handed ownership over to Jørgen and Birthe Kirk, who continued the business under the name Rondane Skisenter (the Norwegian spelling). They worked hard to upgrade the equipment and refurbish the shop, while also attracting new and growing groups of guests from Germany, the UK, the Netherlands, Belgium, Poland, and the USA. With the same hospitality, enthusiasm, and spirit of innovation as Henrik, Jørgen and Birthe carried the tradition forward – while also working to modernize operations and developing new opportunities.
In September 2025, a new chapter began when Tine and Rune Dahl Mortensen took over Rondane Skisenter. The Danish couple have a special connection to the area. As a child, Rune was taught by Henrik Morell at Høvringen and has returned often over the years with family and friends – a circle now complete. Their three sons – Carlo, Viggo, and Leo – have been part of the journey, helping as children’s instructors and even attending the local school in Sel for a period. The family has a deep connection to the area, nature, and local community, and Høvringen has become their second home. Since 2015, Tine and Rune have organised skiing holidays to Høvringen for Danish guests through their travel agency Sne & Vand.
With this strong foundation and love for the region, the Dahl Mortensen family aims to carry Rondane Skisenter forward – focusing on the joy of skiing, safe and memorable nature experiences, quality equipment, and above all, an atmosphere where both new and returning guests feel at home in Høvringen.
